between the individual and society, the local and the national, the past and the
present and the public and private experience”.
This creates a connection between the individual and the influence society has upon
their mindset. Although the individual may be working in “solitude”, society
still exerts a considerable authority on the individual’s ideas and opinions.
There is also an overlapping between what is considered to be in the past and present leading to:
“theories of memory, relationships and self-representation and with debates about literacy and orality”.
